The importance of shopping locally
It’s been sixty-four years since Robert William Etherington established his butchery business in Crofthandy. Since then Britain has been many changes, not least the rise in supermarkets leading to the demise of many independent high street traders. Yet Etherington’s – now in the hands of Robert’s grandson Mark – has remained a steadfast presence in Cornwall, upholding the finest traditions of the British butcher.
Located near Scorrier, Etherington’s Farm Shop, champions a range of local products and produce – with roughly 70% their shelves stocked with local and West Country items – and all their delicious joints are steak are, wherever possible, Cornish.
We’ve been talking to shop manager, Tara O’Donnell about the importance of shopping locally and how Etherington’s are striving to offer customers the very best at affordable prices.
“At Etherington’s we think there’s not much that beats the pure joy of cooking and eating great food. Whether you’re cooking for one, or a big family – a slap up dinner or midweek meal, you can’t go far wrong with tasty, local ingredients.
We are proud to support the local economy and farming industry. Community is important at Etherington’s, with the shop providing rewarding jobs for local residents and contributing to schemes involving young people, healthy eating and the environment.
This ethos extends to our customers, with the business aiming to put affordability and taste to the fore. All these qualities are evident in the products made on-site at Etherington’s by our team. From our fantastic band of ‘Crimpetts’ who hand-make over 1,000 pasties a day, to our cooked meats kitchen, that produces our award-winning ribs in sauce, hog’s pudding and pulled pork.
We strive to offer a food experience like no other by championing food made on the doorstep by local producers and farmers we’re helping to secure our economy and promote Cornwall & the West Country as the ultimate foodie destination. My team and I aim to make shopping a personalised experience that keeps people coming back time-and-time again.”
